Renewable Energies

– for future-oriented energy supplies

Renewable energy sources must become the backbone of a future, sustainable energy supply system. For this goal, cost-effective and highly efficient technologies for centralised and decentralised applications are essential to fully exploit the vast potential of solar radiation, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy. The strategic research topics in the programme “Renewable Energies” are dedicated to next-generation renewable energy technologies and address scientific challenges that require highly complex and long-term developments and / or widely benefit from large-scale facilities operated by the participating Helmholtz centres. A manifold energy supply based on renewable energies necessarily requires an interdisciplinary programme including intensive fundamental research in natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences) and engineering (electrical engineering, mechanical and process engineering).
