Nuclear Fusion

– as a long-term option

Research into nuclear fusion aims at creating a new primary energy source that, in the second half of this century, could contribute significantly to satisfying the increasing energy demand worldwide in a safe way, without CO2 emissions, and with nearly inexhaustible supplies. The task of the programme “Nuclear Fusion” is to contribute to the basis of the design and construction of a fusion power plant. The “Nuclear Fusion” programme is embedded in the European fusion programme, which coordinates fusion research in Europe and financially supports national fusion activities. In addition, international collaborations form an important element of fusion research in Germany.
