Nuclear Waste Management and Safety as well as Radiation Research

– against the background of Germany’s decision to phase out of power generation from nuclear energy

After the reactor accident in Fukushima (Japan) in 2011, the German parliament decided, with the support of a broad societal consensus, to terminate nuclear electricity production with the last nuclear power plant in Germany to be shut down in 2022. A new federal law will re-define the site selection procedure for the German high-level waste repository. It seems clear that various host rock formations will be investigated. The research programme ”Nuclear Waste Management and Safety as well as Radiation Research“ represents an integral part of national provident research and addresses the new challenges arising from these new constraints. Core competences on the internationally highest level of science and technology regarding nuclear safety and waste management research, together with an appropriate participation in international programmes and expert groups (e.g. IAEA, OECD NEA), will be ensured.
