TU9 Policy Briefing 3 Published: KIT’s Contributions to the Energy Transition
-
TU9, the association of Germany’s nine leading technical universities, has published Policy Briefing 3, “Shaping the Energy Transition.”
The briefing aims to highlight key challenges of the energy transition and present scientifically grounded solutions—ranging from technical fundamentals to societal issues.
The briefing focuses on five key areas of action that cover the entire spectrum of the energy system:- Energy generation: Advances in photovoltaics, wind energy, geothermal energy, and future options such as nuclear fusion.
- Energy distribution: Solutions for smart, resilient grids as well as digital and secure energy systems.
- Energy storage: Chemical, electrochemical, and thermal storage, as well as hydrogen technologies to increase the flexibility of the energy system.
- Energy use: Efficiency technologies, electrification of industrial processes, waste heat utilization, and sector coupling.
- Energy systems for people: Social acceptance, participatory processes, and regional value creation as success factors for the energy transition.
The KIT Center for Energy collaborated on the briefing and makes key scientific contributions in several of these areas—for example, through the Energy Lab, one of Europe’s leading research platforms for integrated energy systems. There, real-world power generators, storage systems, consumers, and Power-to-X processes are coupled and investigated in large-scale experiments.
In addition, KIT is working on technologies for hydrogen and synthetic fuels, on innovative solutions for system integration, and in interdisciplinary consortia focused on energy efficiency and sustainable transformation pathways.
The Policy Briefing illustrates how the TU9 universities are jointly providing the scientific impetus necessary for a clean, secure, and affordable energy system —and how KIT is contributing to the implementation of these goals in key areas.
