In March 2026, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) further expanded its partnerships in Canada with a large delegation visit - representing a wide range of disciplines. More than 20 researchers and staff members from key departments traveled to Montreal, Waterloo, London (Ontario), and Toronto.
The trip was coordinated by the KIT Center for Energy in collaboration with Service Unit Internationales (INTL). The goal was to further develop existing partnerships, explore new areas of cooperation, and intensify scientific exchange.
Continuously Growing Collaboration
Relationships with Canadian partner universities have existed for several years and have recently been specifically expanded—for example, through several reciprocal visits and events such as the Energy Symposium organized by the KIT Center for Energy in June 2025, which was also attended by a delegation from Western University.
Building on this, further important steps have been taken in recent months, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at KIT in the fall of 2025 and the development of joint study and research programs. The current delegation trip is another step in this long-term cooperation.
Key Stops and Topics
The trip included stops at McGill University, the University of Waterloo, Queen’s University, and Western University as the central partner. On-site activities focused on strategic discussions, specialized programs, and the identification of concrete cooperation projects.
The range of topics spanned energy systems, artificial intelligence, and robotics to biomedical engineering and mobility. The interdisciplinary composition of the delegation proved to be a key factor in its success.
Exchange with Political and Innovation Stakeholders
To conclude the visit in Toronto, the delegation held discussions with international organizations and political stakeholders, including the German Consulate General, the German-Canadian Chamber of Commerce (AHK), and Mitacs. A high-level meeting with representatives from the German and Canadian ministries of economic affairs underscored the strategic importance of the collaboration.
An accompanying networking event with participants from academia, industry, and the public sector provided additional opportunities for future collaboration, including in the fields of applied research and innovation.
Strategic Role of the KIT Center for Energy
The delegation’s visit underscores the importance of long-term international collaborations for KIT. The KIT Center for Energy plays a central role in energy research at KIT by initiating, coordinating, and further developing these partnerships.
The visit to Canada further strengthened existing networks and opened up new prospects for joint research and innovation projects.
